Over the years I must have read hundreds of books on leadership and ministry. Yet there is one incident that stands out and it’s recorded by John in chapter 13:2-3 of his book. “Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going back to God…took a towel and wrapped it around himself and began to wash his disciples feet.” I have read that many times, and still find it very impressive. We have become so used to the fact that power and privilege are linked and that authority is linked to might, that we find it hard to believe that the greatest power of all could show such humility.
As Christians we are called to do the same, to serve one another, and by doing so we find ourselves serving Christ. I find that thought both inspirational and challenging. All the more so when we read in Matthew 25 that when we serve others we are in fact serving Jesus.
I wonder what opportunities we will have this week to serve others, to be like Jesus and at the same time to minister to him. I am here today because a Christian took the trouble to show kindness to me and to help me when I was struggling. Who is God calling you to help this week?
