“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.” Romans 8:28 ESV.  At first glance this may appear to indicate that God could be the cause of some of the bad things that happen to us, which I do not believe to be true. Indeed some translations put it this way “that God works in all things.” So even when bad things happen, which admittedly some times can be our fault, that God is still at work. If we go on loving and trusting him then he will bring good out of bad situations. Taking broken messes and bringing something beautiful out of them is something that God specialises in. I find the word of John 16:33 very comforting. “In this world you will have many troubles, but take heart, I have overcome the world.”

I love the thought that God wants us to take heart, to be encouraged. How many times have I faced difficult situations, and thought the worst, worrying unnecessarily, only to find that God has heard my prayer and turned what could have been a bad situation into a blessing. I remember clearly sitting in Stanstead airport, my flight had been cancelled and the next flight was in 8 hours!! I was going to miss an important meeting and let folk down. I simply could not afford the time to sit in an airport. Yet as a result of that I ended up speaking to a fellow passenger, and was able to share my faith. We arranged to meet up a few weeks later. When we met up he shared that our meeting was really significant for him.

I really do need to keep learning that I can trust God daily in all of life’s ups and downs.
