I started last week’s blog with the statement “that we long to see lives changed and communities transformed” which is very much a part of our vision here at St John’s. I was speaking to a young man recently who was telling me how his life had literally been turned upside down by doing the Ignite course. He had discovered something of the purpose that God had for his life. He was now excited and enthusiastic about the possibility of taking what he had learnt and putting it into practice. Part of the thrill of doing my job is of having the enormous privilege of seeing the difference that Christ makes to peoples lives as they surrender to him.
How did Christ change people? Not by convincing them intellectually, but by winning their hearts to personal trust and personal devotion to him.
On the next two Sunday mornings, we will be exploring together how we hear God. It’s something that, if we are honest, we all struggle with. Yet hearing God is only part of the problem. We also have to be willing to do what he asks of us. We do need the Holy Spirits help each day, we don’t have to do it all in our own strength. Philippians2:13 “God is working in you, giving you the desire and power to do what pleases him.” As we surrender to God he works in us and puts his desires in our hearts and gives us the power to be different. Surrender to God. That seems to be the key.
